From the OMDE 601 class discussion board, my original definition of distance education is:
"According to my experience, Distance Education is the process of teaching and learning, with some physical or temporal distance between the instructor and the student."

Hi Heather, a very well designed LJ with many extended reflective entries. The Journal shows a high level of personal engagement in the course and picks up on many of the discussions we had in the course. Well done Thomas |

responses to my discussion board posts:
Heather, This is just a quick note to acknowledge the excellent work you are doing on your Learning Journal. So far, your entries are substantial, thoughtful, and reflective. Not only do you do an excellent job of commenting on the readings, conversations, and classwork, you do an especially good job of demonstrating self-awareness—your strengths and weaknesses as a learner. I’m particularly encouraged that the journal you are creating will demonstrate your growth over time. If you were to receive a grade at this point, it would be a very high A Nice job! Steve final evaluation of my learning journal: Heather, Your portfolio looks very nice and is easy to navigate. The extras you offer (from course comments to embedded videos) is a nice touch. Your 610 journal was a nice collection of observations on the whole experience of our class this semester. What’s strong about these entries is that they are related to our class themes and, by extension, our class objectives. Your observations are thoughtful and insightful. Also, what’s especially strong about your entries is the reflective component. We can look here and not only track the progress of your learning, but see how the experience of 610 can affect your own teaching and learning career. All in all, you produced some very nice work in this class. 100% Best, Steve |

DETC 620 Training and Learning with Multimedia
Assignment #1 is based on the classic "Media Debate" between Richard E. Clark and Robert B. Kozma on the impact of media on learning. Please find the following articles under " e Readings" . You should read them in chronological order:
5. Carter, V. (1996). Do media influence learning? Revisiting the debate in the context of distance education. Open Learning (February),
31-40.
You might think that these readings are rather "out-dated"; however, the authors touch upon fundamental questions that are essential in understanding the relationship between media and learning. The Clark-Kozma debate is a classic in the field of media and learning, and it is essential for students to engage with both sides of the argument. The task is to participate in an online discussion, in which you will advocate for one of the two positions in the media debate.
Heather, as you can see your grade for assignment #1 is 98. Congratulations!
Preparation of discussion in groups (10 of 10): You contributed to your study group conference nicely by starting one thread and replying frequently to others.
Quantitative participation in the conference (10 of 10): More than 4 messages posted on a regular basis.
Content (14.5 of 15): Your arguments, challenges etc. are presented in a logical and meaningful manner, based on solid knowledge about the research articles covered in the course.
Interaction (14.5 of 15): You initiated a discussion and also referred nicely to other students' arguments, challenges or explanations. Well done!
Best regards, Olaf

Professor,
I calculated that I barely fall within the word count as long as direct quotations, citations, references, and headings do not count (the criteria given to me in the foundational OMDE courses). There is so much to say when evaluating with LORI!
Thank you for the assignment - it taught me a lot about evaluating multimedia, a skill that I will use often I believe. Please enjoy my work.
Heather
Heather, as you can see, your mark on assignment is 88. Well done!
Structure and style (5 of 10 marks): Your paper has a clear structure and is well written. An introduction is missing.
Description of the two finalists (19 of 20 marks): Well done, a screenshot would be helpful to illustrate the applications.
Approach to multimedia evaluation (14 of 20 marks): You could describe your approach to multimedia evaluation in more detail and further improve this part by elaborating more on the advantages (and disadvantages) of instruments like LORI or the QWS method in contrast to NWS (see Baumgartner paper).
Assessment of the two finalists with LORI (30 of 30 marks): You provide a clear overview how the two applications score on each dimension.
Summary (20 of 20 marks): Your summary is well balanced and it succinctly highlights the most attractive features of the winning multimedia application.
It was a pleasure to read your paper. Thank you, Heather! Regards, Olaf

Format and layout (8/10): Too long - over the word count (refs must be included). Great use of all layout features, including tables, bulleted lists and relevant images. Only thing is… the text on the images is not legible, which defeats their purpose.
Content/Info (58/60): This is a good and relevant application of MM learning to a real-world need. Excellent application and discussion of ADDIE and the Spiral model. I would like more direct characteristics of the elementary school children. Do not confuse 'multimedia' with 'delivery media' (Clark-Kozma) -- they were not referring to multimedia learning materials. Image on pg 6 is too small and not integrated into the discussion. I like the total learning package of read aloud stories, read again later, quiz questions and lesson plans. Excellent team and roll-out plan.
Quality of writing (15/15): The proposal is well written, well organized and presents ideas in a coherent way.
References (15/15): An excellent list of scholarly sources, including course readings. APA style is correctly applied. Well done.
Intro&Conclusion (10/10): Well done! The director has approved your project based on your audio presentation. This is the best adherence to the roleplay scenario that I have heard - thank you!
Content/Info (30/30): The presentation provides a valuable complement and argument to support the written propoal - again, the best synthesis I have heard!
Quality of audio expression (10/10): Excellent use of the audio medium, including tone, expression, pacing and pausing in delivering an inspriational argument.
